Asanas improves respiratory system
The lungs are two air-filled organs on each side of the chest. Inhaled air is delivered to the lungs via tubular branches known as bronchi. Bronchi divide further into tiny branches (bronchioles) until they are minuscule. This respiratory system supplies oxygen and works along with the circulatory system to oxygenate the blood. It is oxygen that burns sugars and fatty acids in our cells to produce energy.
Pollution and lungs
In modern times you can see the reduced air quality because of the highly polluting atmosphere around us. Contamination can worsen breathing difficulties and harm lung health. When your lungs are time-exposed to pollution, your health is hurt, irritated and increases your risk of heart attack too. Lungs get irritated because of heavy pollution.
Particle Matter, which is a small particle that can irritate the airways, is the most common type of air pollution Air-borne nitrogen dioxide causes COPD and asthma flare-ups.
Ozone inhalation may be an irritating factor in airways, which reduces the pulmonary capacity. The health effects can last for a month if you are regularly exposed to polluted air.
Yoga asanas and lungs
Yoga is the most effective way to keep your lungs in good condition. Yoga has been shown to reduce stress while also strengthening the lungs.
Because all asanas require breathing synchronisation, the lungs' ability will improve. Bow and wheel pose in yoga help to strengthen the lungs, and breathing exercises can aid in mucus removal.
Why harmonizing the breath is important in Yoga?
One can live without taking food for days and even without water day for a couple of days. But one can not live without air for more than 5 minutes. Breathing is that important! If you feel are in anger/stressed immediately taking longer breathings which will eliminate stress. So if you are conscious about your breath you are giving a pleasant sensation to your body.
Yoga’s main intention is to remove stress from you, both physical mental stress. Increasing consciousness towards what you do and about your body So by consciously monitoring your breath which is one of the vital forces for human life, one can give a soothing effect to your body.
Pranayama and lungs
Prana means "vital life force," while Yama means to gain control. Practising breathing exercises, or pranayama is one key to maximizing lung capacity. Pranayama including Nadi suddhi, Basthrika, sheethali, sheetkari having different benefits and mostly improves the ability of the lungs. This pranayama practises removes mucus out of the lungs and strengthens it. This will increase the lungs to oxygenate blood properly as the presence of mucus can fill the bronchioles(air bags) which could degrade the lungs activity.
So practise yoga asanas as well as Pranayama to keep your lungs healthy. :)
